Congratulations to June 2012's 'You've Been Caked!  For Your Kindness' recipient, Beverley Tidwell of Candlelighters of Southern Arizona!  Beverley is director of Candlelighters a non-profit organization that supports children with cancer and their families through support, advocacy, and networking.  Candlelighters also provides events for the children to experience fun outside of their course of treatment. Beverley's journey with Candlelighters started in the mid 1990's when her young son was diagnosed with a brain tumor when he was 4 years old.  The doctors told her that the tumor was inoperable but Beverley refused to believe this and stepped outside the box finding a doctor in New York willing to take on her son's case.  The tumor was removed and her son lived another 7 years until sadly his body succumbed to…

  We were honored to be invited to the Navy Reserve Spaghetti dinner fundraiser on Saturday 6-2-12.  We had worked with the Navy reserves back in December 2011 when we made cakes for their Christmas party.  The Navy commander extended an invitation to us to join them for this dinner saying that since it was a fundraiser he did not feel it appropriate to put in a request for sweets.  He just wanted us to come out and enjoy ourselves.  So Jeanne, Liz, Pam, Terrill, and myself bought tickets and headed to the dinner. Of course we could not show up without sweets in hand so we surprised them with sugar, chocolate chip, and Orange Creamsicle cookies and brownie bites.  They were most excited and so appreciative!  We had a…

  What a busy weekend it was for us this past weekend!  Operation Baby Brigade hosted by Operation Homefront of Arizona occurred on Saturday June 2, 2012.  Operation Homefront requested 100 cupcakes and a small centerpiece cake for their baby shower for military moms-t0-be.  Our bakers were very excited and turned on their mixers and ovens and hopped to it! Our baker Jess suggested that we also include 100 baby feet shaped cookies for the moms to take home as a party gift.   Jess baked all 100 cookies and with Rita's help they were decorated with pink and blue royal icing.  They turned out SO cute!   We have a 'Diamond Team' here at Cakes for Causes and this team consists of five of our bakers, Jess Bemiss, Martha Ortiz, Christy Palmer, Tamara Bemiss, and Rene' Luedeman.   These ladies are ready to go on a last minute's notice to provide a special birthday cake for a chronic, critically ill child who will be spending his/her birthday in the hospital at Diamond Children's Medical Center.  We are honored to be able to do this to bring celebration and joy to these little ones.  Friday, May 18, 2012 was Larry's 8th birthday and it was Martha's turn in the rotation and she jumped right in!  Larry wanted a chocolate cake and he loves Star Wars so Martha put her head to the task and created this wonderful cake…
